Chapter 40

Freeloader

Mordida Tropical Apartments—That night

“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming,” Bruce mumbled, heading for the door to his apartment.

The wine bar had closed at seven—no reason to keep it open late on a Wednesday, thanks to the earthquake—and he’d barely been home long enough to take a piss. Then someone pounded on his door, and he’d groaned. All he wanted to do was nuke a frozen burrito and scarf it down.

Bruce opened the door and, without being invited, Tyler came striding in.

The dude looked a bit like the actor who played Kelso from That ’70s Show reruns. “I got your text. So, what’s happening?”

“Ya couldn’t text back?” Bruce asked, and closed the door behind him.

“I saw your car. You wanna go shoot some pool?”

Tyler went straight to the refrigerator and helped himself to a cold beer. Again without being invited. Dude was presumptuous. But might as well tell him.

“I’m gonna be rich.”

Tyler snorted. “What, are they handing out money for playing video games?”

“Don’t be an ass. Remember that camera equipment I bought?”

“Yeah, the spy stuff?”

“Yup. I hid it in this rich guy’s private room at the winery, and I caught him on video screwing this girl. And damn, is he twisted. A real pervert.” Bruce elbowed Tyler aside and grabbed himself a beer too.

“Bro, let’s see it.”

“Don’t you want to know how much money I’m asking for?”

“Okay, how much?”

“A hundred bitcoins.”

“That’s not much.”

Yeah, Tyler was a moron. “You think a cool three and a half million isn’t much?”

“Seriously?”

“Really, dude. Don’t you keep up? Bitcoins are going for thirty-five thousand apiece now.”

When he’d written the note, bitcoins were closer to eleven thousand each. By the time the letter got delivered, the price had skyrocketed, making him one lucky dude.

“You’re nuts.” Tyler flopped onto the couch and stuck his hand in the potato chip bag lying on the banged-up coffee table, which was a hand-me-down from Grandma. “Who would pay that kind of money for a sex video?”

“Wait until you see it.” Bruce started the video on his laptop, then plopped his butt down on the overstuffed recliner and grabbed the chip bag before Tyler ate the whole thing.

A few minutes into the video, Tyler said, “She’s hot. How come all the chicks like that go for rich guys?”

“Yeah, but get this—that chick— Well, the old dude is fucking his nephew’s fiancée.”

“No shit?”

“Just keep watching.”

They did. When the old man released the girl’s neck, Tyler put his hands over his eyes. “Yuck, that’s gross. How can you watch that?”

“Yeah, it is pretty gross. But that’s what’s gonna make me rich. A sick fuck like that will probably pay any amount to keep this off the internet.”

“Screw that. You should put it up on one of those porn pay-per-views. I bet there are other sick pervs who’d pay to see it.”

“Wish I’d thought of that sooner.” Bruce pushed back on the recliner—another hand-me-down from Grandma—and it went caa-chunk as he stretched out. “I’ll put it on pay-per-view if the guy doesn’t give me the money. But ya know, I think he’ll pay.
